Musings and Nominations

The time has come!
I have stayed away long enough, and am now preparing to unleash another season of ICON-O-CLASH! on an unsuspecting public.
This season presents another thematic twist: all the competitors will be real-life figures, living or dead, who have achieved iconic status.
PARAMETERS:
1. All realms of notoriety will be considered. Music, Acting, Athletics, Historical/Cultural, Tabloid, pretty much anything that could be used as a category in Trivial Pursuit is valid.
2. Truly "infamous" figures will not be included. As much as Hitler or GW Bush have become iconic, not many of us would consider them "cool" in any sense. That being said, Napoleon and Genghis Khan are on my working list, (mostly because of their inclusion in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure")
3. Religious figures will also not be included. While it could be argued these folks have achieved the highest possible level of iconic status, I don't want to have to make a decision between Jesus and Buddha and upset any ideological apple carts.
4. I had included "creator" figures like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney on my working list, but I think I am going to exclude those. It would be difficult to separate the coolness of the creator from his or her creations, and many of those creations have already battled in previous seasons.
DISCUSSION POINTS:
1. I would like input on the forum of this season. Should ICON-O-CLASH! remain a blog, or migrate over to a group on that other networking forum that rhymes with "Schmakebook"
2. Cool or Ironi-cool? I would like agreement, (or at least a discussion) on the level of "ironi-cool" that we are measuring. Strictly speaking, "ironi-cool" is achieved by being so uncool that you become cool. Therefore, characters in previous versions have advanced based on their obscurity, their esoteric nature, or a "nerd-factor" that makes them recognizable for less obvious reasons.
Both the list of competitors and their chances will depend on how we address this issue. There is a big difference in why George Washington Carver is cool, as opposed to David Bowie or James Dean.
3. Length of battle. We can probably get to the standard 128 nominated icons, but is that too much of an investment in people's time? I'm all for cutting back a level and doing 64 participants, if it results in more enthusiasm and less attrition.

What's Up, Champ!
Ladies and gentlemen I give you your ICON-O-CLASH! Season 2 champion! Bugs Bunny stole the show and the tournament in a 2:1 ratio rout of the guy dressed up like a blind rodent. Bugs in the end had it all in the eyes of the voters: longevity, class, coolness, combat skills and cultural significance. Bugs also won out on more esoteric factors, like his allegorical ties to figures from folklore, and his cross-dressing sex appeal.
That's all, folks! Thanks to everyone who voted and/or lurked throughout this season, (including those lazy folks on facebook who may never get over here to read this). As always a big thanks goes to Jeffy for his invaluable assistance on the graphics and the always controversial betting pool, (check over there to see how the final scores played out).

ICON-O-CLASH! FINAL BATTLE!

Bugs vs. Bats! Epic/Final Showdown/Confrontation for Ultimate/Supreme Pop Cultur-ity!!!!
OK folks, this is it: the final match to determine the winner of the ICON-O-CLASH! Masters Tournament.
In one corner: a rascally rabbit; suave, cool under pressure, who always has a trick up his sleeve.
In the other: a man of action; determined, skilled, and equally prepared for anything.
Bugs is reminiscent of Batman's usual foil, the Joker. Bugs usually plays the usurper, poking holes in the status quo of his opponents. Could he undermine the cool facade of the Dark Knight and get under his skin? Bugs has humbled bigger than Mr. Wayne before, (remember "The Crusher"? Remember the construction worker guy? Remember that big red monster thing to whom he gave a "dynamite" hair-do?)
Or would it play out like most of Batman's other battles. The antagonist breezes into town, creating chaos everywhere and gets the best of Bats. Then, when all seems lost and our hero is either licking his wounds in the Batcave or trapped in some kind of intricately gimmicky death-machine, his keen detective skills and resourcefulness kick in and he pulls out the win. Besides, bats eat bugs, right?

Batman took out the Littlest Jedi with a "Biff" and a "Pow" and then danced the "batusi" all the way to the finals.

Round 6 Match 2

Looney Tunes vs. Disney!
These two are truly the giants of animation. And now they face off to claim the cartoon crown!
Historically significant? Yes. Both have remained at the top of their game for decades, and influenced later generations of icons within their media. (Think of all the "funny animal" characters who are rabbits or mice.)
Popularity or "coolness"? Yes. Both are undeniably popular. While some may want to paint Mickey as a symbol of a big commercial bulldozer, somebody out there is shelling out the money for the plane tickets to Florida, and they usually come back happy. And, let's not forget the Warner Brothers cash-grabs like "Space Jam" or the numerous times Looney Tunes characters have found themselves on products from running shoes to toothpaste. So don't hate the player.
Combat? Bugs has a bit of an advantage here, since his adventures tended to be a little more violent, but let's not count the Mouse out. He's taken down giants and wielded powerful magic so he's tougher than the shrill voice would indicate.
The evidence is yours to deliberate as you wish. Trust your instincts and vote your conscience. Who's going to the finals and who's going to the taxidermist? Your votes decide!

Comic Books vs Star Wars
He survived battles with the likes of the Grinch and even Superman, but can Batman defeat the wise "sage" Jedi? (Get it? He's green? Sage green? Is this thing on?)
Both have their share of pop culture references: from the "Bat-this" and "Holy-that", to the distinctive reverse-speak and Frank Oz voice.
Both are "cool". No one would be embarrassed if they got a Batman or Yoda toy or T-Shirt for their birthday.
Both are representative of larger franchises. Batman is a watershed icon in the comics community, and although there were other Star Wars icons in the competition, no one can deny the influence the Lucasverse has had on the film industry.
The choice will be hard, but it must be done nonetheless! Make your decision and vote wisely!

Round 5 Winners

	Defeat the mighty Homer; Yoda did. Advance to the Semifinals; he does.
	Mickey enjoyed less non-support than Barbie, and begrudgingly gets to go to the final four.
	Bugs Bunny was proclaimed mightiest of all in the House of Mel Blanc, as he knocked off his sometime colleague and part-time rival Daffy Duck.
	And then there was the closest (and likely most entertaining) match of the season. In a true see-saw battle, that spanned several topics including combat advantages, historical significance, and sex appeal, Batman defeated the last son of Krypton to earn another step towards icon supremacy. In true Batman fashion, he saved himself from certain doom at the last minute, and pulled an unexpected trick from his utility belt to win the day. Holy nailbiters!

Geek Idol Bloodbath!
Who do you find yourself referencing more? The reverse-speak of Yoda, or Homerisms? What has played a larger role in your life? The Simpson's or Star Wars? If you had to choose between being able to live in Springfield or being able to become a Jedi, which would it be? Would Yoda be able to find any Midi-Chlorians in Homer, and even if he did, would Homer be able to understand what Yoda was talking about? They both have the same hair, so that can't come into play. Choose your criteria, take your stand and declare your favourite!

Battle of the Evil Pop Culture Overlords!
Throughout this whole competition, voters have had to grudgingly admit to the power of these two icons. How many times did we read "I hate what Mickey represents, but I still have to vote for him" or "Barbie has played a role in the decline of Western civilization, but she is still more powerful than her competition".
Well, folks, now is your chance to finally get rid of one of them. One of these demonized icons will not make it to the semi's. Figure out which one you don't dislike the least, and then vote for the other one (I think).

Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season!
We started this competition with plenty of multiple icons from the same franchise or theme. It's a testament to the strength of the Looney Tunes brand that two of their characters made it to the quarterfinals.
Like the battle seen below, aspects of this conflict have played out within the cartoons themselves. Take into account the catchphrases generated by each. Also, even though Bugs is surely the front man of the group, Daffy actually pre-dates the Bunny by three years.
It's a hard choice but now is the time to cut one of these great cultural figures. Which one will it be?

Superhero Showdown!
While many, (including BarrieIce) may contend this battle has already been played out in Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", we must remember that this tournament operates on several levels, not just combat. And on closer inspection, there are lots of differences on which to evaluate these two. Not the least of which is their philosophical differences.
Miller himself has pointed out that these two icons are fundamentally opposite in their outlook. Superman believes that the world is inherently good and therefore needs to be protected from external forces. Batman believes the world is inherently corrupt and therefore needs to be "fixed" through the sheer force of will of individuals like himself. In Miller's words, "these two would not get along".
So, for this reason and many others, a vote must be cast once and for all. Who is cooler in your eyes? What path of heroism do you subscribe to?

Round 4 Week 2 Winners

	Homer benefited from the general apathy of this week's voting to slide past our furry friend from Sesame Street. It was a close match. So close it needed some last minute straw votes to decide a winner.
	Yoda became both the last Star Wars champion and the last muppet (see below) left in the competition. Not even the tubby little cubby from Winnipeg could keep the wise one from Dagobah down.
	Bugs Bunny proved too looney for even Kermit to handle, as he hopped his way to the quarterfinals.
	Superman provided the technical SQUASH! of the week, (although they were all very close) when he knocked off James Bond. The final 8 are decided. Now the real debates can begin...

Lovable, furry old Grover has got some big competition now in the enduring and quotable (and potable) Homer J. Simpson. Will Homer add "icon-champ" to his vast list of accomplishments ("Outer space? You've never been?"). Or will the Sesame Street Slugger play the spoiler and become the monster at the end of this tourney?

We've seen representatives from each of these franchises face off previously in this competition. Now, two of the biggest from each house battle it out. Both icons have crossed over into movies, merchandise, and even music (I remember a Kermit Unplugged album, as well as the massively successful soundtrack to "Space Jams") Who will reign supreme here? Who do you feel is cooler than the other and why? Didn't the Muppet Show come on Saturday evenings, same as the hour-long Looney Tunes show? Which did you watch with more enthusiasm?

Secret Identity vs. Secret Agent
This is a clash of two very different takes on "heroism". Superman fights a colourful cast of villains while preventing natural disasters and/or property damage; and has vowed to never kill. Bond fights a no less colourful group of foes, but usually causes massive property damage and a high body count. It's likely that they would be at odds if they met. Would James' luck and gadgetry overcome the raw power of the big blue boy scout?

	Batman finally put the SQUASH! on the Grinch's rampage of terror and moves into position among the final 8 icons. Holy winning streak Batman!
	Daffy Duck surprised many when he took down Indiana Jones, bullwhip and all.
	Mickey once again won many begrudging votes and put Lord Greystoke out to pasture.
	Barbie pulled off a very close victory over her biggest foe yet, Darth Vader. As the sole female character, Barbie carries a lot on her shoulders, as well as a fashionable handbag.

The Grinch looks like he belongs in Batman's rogues gallery. He's got the fiendish grin, the green motif, and the great tragic back story (courtesy of the Carey movie).

Girl Icon vs. Fallen Padawan
It just keeps getting tougher, doesn't it? Now you have to decide if the power of Barbie is stronger than the Dark Side of the Force.
What's cooler? The pink Corvette, or that souped-up tie fighter?
If Barbie had met Annakin back in the day, would she have wooed him away from Amidala, and saved the universe those awful prequels?
Even later, would she be able to give Lord Vader a make-over? Or, would Vader give into his anger and cut her down like he did the other Jedi?

	Grover took Mr. Mulder down as easily as handling that big plate of spaghetti.
	Yoda put the big Jedi-sized SQUASH! on the lord of Neverland as he pulled out the only (I think. Might need to check with the stats guys on this) shut-out of the season.
	Kermit won the closest match of the week as he edged past Snoopy to go to the final 16. Two muppets go to the final 16, along with two Looney Tunes icons (see below). What dynasty will prevail in the end?
	Bugs also enjoyed a runaway victory that even last-minute leaking publicity couldn't overcome. Don't worry Harry. You got our $13.50 for the movie, and you already got our money for the book on pre-sale. Let the rabbit have his little victory, you can retire with both Cho and Ginny in a big mansion somewhere.

	Mickey is the winner in the closest match to date. Mr. In-The-Hat garnered enough votes to bring it to a deadlock tie, and it came down to this: if your silhouette is recognizable enough that it can become a logo image, that's pretty iconic (and in the end pretty cool too). Don't worry folks, in every competition there needs to be a "love-to-hate-him" player, and this time his name is Mickey.
	Speaking of iconic figures, the big black helmet proved just too cool for even Spidey to handle. In a surprising move, Darth made this a one-sided SQUASH! I suspect the Jedi mind trick in use...
	Superman also gained a fairly easy win over Archie. Will anyone prove to have the kryptonite touch and put big blue down? Time will tell...
	Daffy took out the video vixen Lara Croft and made his way to the final 16 icons.

	Homer, as usual laid on the couch and fell into victory by a hair (or two hairs if you look at his noggin) Can the lazy oaf continue to keep the Simpson's hopes alive in this tournament?
	Batman took on the alien gardener and won! Could the ET votes be a thinly veiled attempt at strategic voting by the betting pool members? If so, someone dodged another bullet and gained points despite their efforts.
	James Bond didn't even need a full 24 hours to finally eliminate Jack f'n Bauer from the competition, and gave him a SQUASH! to boot.
	Tarzan was successful in his vendetta against Star Trek, as he took out the big mustard-coloured machine, James T Kirk.

It's a catchphrase and trademark battle, as Homer's quotable lines faces Fonzie's pop culture permeation. One could make a case that for his time and with the media sources available, Fonzie was at least as popular as Homer. However, no one can deny the anti-dad his star status in the hearts and minds of Simpson's fandom. Only you can decide who is cooler: the anti-Mr. Cunningham, or Milwaukee's best?

One has vanquished a nerd and a bird, the other has beaten both cowboy and cow. It's a little known (possibly untrue) fact that Batman has a nut allergy. All those Reese's Pieces may come in handy for the potato-shaped alien if things turn physical. Did Bats remember to pack his Bat-epi-pen in his utility belt? 	Strong Bad must have mistaken Winnie the Pooh for the Poopsmith, and underestimated Winnie's power. That, along with the fact that most of the panelists had no idea who he was, lead to a resounding SQUASH!
	The Grinch once again trounced another big hitter, as he sent Bart back to Springfield with another melted Christmas tree.
	Indiana Jones beat the shark, (as opposed to jumping it), and swash buckled his way into the next round. Lots of enthusiasm for Dr. Jones, but we'll see what happens when the stakes get even higher.
	Barbie is proving to be the icon that the voters love to hate, as she dragged many kicking and screaming over to her favour in her battle against Ms. Boop.

Tiger Id vs. Comeback Kid!
Tigger: The manic big cat, who shook things up in the hundred acre wood when he pounced on the scene.
Calvin: Our only repeat combatant from Season 1 returns to fight again. I felt that Calvin got eliminated because he appeared too mainstream under the previous criteria, so here is a chance for him to battle it out amongst his peers.
Criteria: Funny that these two got paired together, since Tigger looks so much like Calvin's regular partner, and Calvin is kind of a rowdier Christopher Robin. It begs the question, what would a "Calvin and Tigger" comic strip be like? Would Tigger steal the show? Would Calvin put the bouncy feline in his place?

Snow White: Disney's first of many adaptations of classic fairy tales. Not the strongest example of modern feminist ideals, and her prince doesn't even have a name other than an adjective, but she is kind, sweet, and accepting. All fairly cool traits.
Criteria: This is a bit of a "boys vs. girls" contest. What if Snow White was one of Spidey's villains, complete with her cadre of diminutive soldiers now known as "The 7 Deadly Sins"? Can Spidey defeat their jewel-stealing crime wave? Hi Hooooo!
